Volkswagen facts: Founded in Wolfsburg, Germany in 1937, Volkswagen is Europe's biggest car maker. It's name means 'people's car', the design philosophy was to make cars that were affordable to ordinary Germans in what was a predominantly premium national car market. After World War 2 the Porsche-designed Volkswagen Beetle was offered to the American, Australian, British, and French motor industries, and all rejected it. One British industrialist went as far to say that the project would fail within two years. Not only did the Beetle prosper, but Volkswagen is now one of the world's largest car makers, and also owns the Audi, SEAT, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Scania, and Skoda brands. The first Volkswagen Beetle arrived in Australia in 1953.
