What is a sunroof repair?
Roofs on vehicles have changed over the years. With new safety designs in glass panels, we have gone from a small peek at the sky to large tinted moonroofs that can almost take over the entire ceiling of a car.
The sunroof is a panel that slides out of the way to expose a window in the roof. The window can then either tilt open or completely slide open, allowing vehicle occupants to see outside and/or allow fresh air into the cabin from above.
The sunroof allows the window to be exposed or hidden as per the driver’s preference, so they can control sun exposure and decrease visibility into the vehicle when required.
The term sunroof can also encapsulate the complete unit, including the glass, track assembly, motor, rails and cover panel.
How to tell if you need sunroof repairs
There are some nice benefits of having a sunroof, like enjoying the sunlight, fresh air and seeing what’s going on above. However, there are problems that can arise whenever you have mechanics at play. Here are some signs to consider sunroof repairs:
- Water leakage
- Can’t open or close the sunroof
- Shattered or broken glass
- Wind noise
- Condensation build-up on the inside of the glass
- Intermittent operation
How important is it to get sunroof repairs done?
With sunroofs the longer you leave a problem the more likely it will get worse and if it’s failed altogether, then it’s just a hole in the roof that you can’t enjoy. Water leakage could become a health issue, the water can become stagnant and/or create mould. Depending on how bad it is, water leaking from a sunroof can also cause permanent damage to the interior of a vehicle.
If the sunroof motor is not working properly or the tracks are not functioning properly then it will be a struggle to use it and you run the risk of it eventually getting stuck in the open position, then you will only be able to drive on blue sky days.
Most importantly, if you ever plan on selling the car, it will be more difficult to sell with a non-functioning sunroof. No one wants to pay for a hole in the roof if they can’t enjoy the benefits of it.
How is a sunroof repair carried out
The sunroof will be inspected to determine what needs to be repaired or replaced.
If the sunroof glass is cracked or damaged then an auto glass expert will source and fit new glass.
When the sunroof motor needs replacing then a repairer will need to access the motor. This is typically located inside the compartment between the windscreen, sunroof and visors on the roof interior. The motor will be removed and replaced.
If the drainage tubes are blocked then a repairer will locate the clogged drain/s and unclog it.
If the sunroof seal needs to be replaced then the sunroof will need to be removed from the vehicle, the seal will be removed and replaced and the sunroof will be refitted.
How much will sunroof repairs cost?
As you now know there are a few things that can go wrong with a sunroof. The price to repair a sunroof will generally range from the low to high hundreds. Which section of the hundreds depends on the issue, vehicle make and model and the parts required. Obviously, if the sunroof needs to be removed from the vehicle it will be a higher cost due to the additional labour involved.
