Kia facts: Kia was founded in Korea, in 1944, and began making cars in 1974. It is Korea's second-biggest car maker, behind Hyundai, who in fact now own just over a third of the Kia company. The company name is derived from the Korean word Ki, meaning 'come out', while the last letter 'a' stands for Asia. Put those two name components together, and Kia roughly translates into English as "rising out of Asia". And rise out of Asia it does, making almost 3 million cars annually, on sale in more than 170 countries.
