Squealing Noise from Brakes Inspection

How Much does a Squealing Noise from Brakes Inspection Cost?

A squealing noise from your brakes is not only annoying for you and other drivers, but can mean that there is an issue with one of the most important systems on your vehicle.

Having it inspected as soon as possible will ensure that the braking system is operating safely and efficiently.

How does the Braking System Work?

The braking system relies on a number of essential components to perform effectively.

These include the brake master cylinder, brake pads, brake fluid, brake lines, brake disc rotors and brake calipers.

When the brake pedal is depressed, the brake fluid transfers the pressure from the master cylinder down to the brake callipers through the brake lines, which presses the brake pads against the disc rotors.

This clamping pressure brings the vehicle to a stop. Once the brake pedal is released, the opposite happens and the brakes are released, allowing the vehicle to move.

Common Reasons for a Squealing Noise from Brakes

Brake pad friction material low

Brake pads are the most replaced component in the braking system and excessively worn out brake pads are the number one cause of squealing or squeaking noises when braking.

When the friction material is low, a small wear indicator will contact the brake rotor causing an audible warning, usually a squealing or squeaking noise.

Brake discs glazed

The surface of the brake disc is what the brake pads run on and clamp to when the brake pedal is depressed. If this surface has been overheated, has a rust or oxidation coating, this will cause a squealing noise when the brakes are applied.

Debris caught in braking system

If a rock or other debris is caught in the braking system, this can cause a squealing or growling noise, as well as causing damage to the braking components.

Backing plate touching against brake disc

Most brake discs will have a backing plate behind them to prevent debris getting caught in the brake components.

These can be easily damaged by rubbish and debris on the road, which may cause a noise from the brakes if it is rubbing against the disc rotor.

What’s Involved in the Squealing Noise from Brakes Inspection?

The mechanic will inspect all components of the braking system, including the brake pads, disc rotors, callipers and cylinders to determine the cause of the squealing noise and provide a detailed quote of necessary repairs required.

How Important is this Inspection?

The braking system is the most critical safety feature on your vehicle, so it is important to make sure it is in correct working order to protect you and your family, as well as other motorists on the road.
