What is a transmission speed sensor?

Your vehicle's transmission speed sensor, sometimes called a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is responsible for working out what speed your vehicle  is doing. It then sends the information to the engine control unit (your car's brain) and from there, depending on if your car is manual or automatic, it can determine which gear you should be in, your ignition timing and fuel injection settings. All of  which help with the vehicle's efficiency, emissions and drivability. 

It also relays that information to the display on the speedometer to let you know what speed you are doing and kilometers travelled.

What causes a speed sensor to malfunction?

A transmission speed sensor can fail due to a variety of reasons:

• A poor connection between the sensor and ECU
• Loose or disconnected wires
• Corrosion of components
• A damaged magnetic coil
• Sensors coming loose

How to tell if your transmission speed sensor needs repairing

A faulty transmission speed sensor can cause a multitude of problems 

• Faulty cruise control
• Sluggish shifting
• Difficult shifting
• Malfunctioning speedometer
• Check engine light

Is it important to get the transmission speed sensor repaired?

Delaying the repair of a faulty speed sensor could cost you money, obviously without an accurate speedometer your chance of receiving a speeding fine will be high and  it could also cost you money in excessive fuel consumption.

It is recommended you get it repaired as soon as you notice an issue.

How is the transmission speed sensor repaired?

In most cases it's the sensor itself that fails. generally, despite the importance of the sensor the repair cost is relatively low with both the sensor and the labour to replace is affordable.
