Proton facts: Proton is a Malaysian car maker, founded in 1983. Its name isn't based on the science term, instead it's an acronym: Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sendirian Berhad (National Automobile Company Private Limited). It moved from being a government-owned to a privately-owned company in 2012. Though predominantly sold in its home country, Proton cars are exported to 26 countries, mostly in Asia. The first Proton model to go on sale in Australia was the Wira in 1995, and a year later an Australian subsidiary of the brand was established.
