Mini facts: One of the motoring world's truly great designs, the Mini was born of a reaction to fuel shortages caused by the Suez Crisis of 1956. The car went on sale in 1959, and in one form or another was sold under the British Motor Corporation, British Leyland, Rover, Austin, Morris, and Wolseley brands, until the year 2000. All up 5.3 million Minis were sold. The name was revived in 2001 by new owner BMW, with a new range of cars owing a clear design debt to the original Mini.
