Cape York Automotive is a locally owned and family operated mechanical workshop at 2 Federation Street, Bungalow, Queensland, in Cairns. Rob Wilkins owns the business and has spent more than 25 years leading it and training apprentices and mechanics in the Cairns region. The team he has built is fully qualified, and because several of them have long experience with different parts of a vehicle, there is usually someone on deck who has seen a particular fault before and can work out where to start.

What 4WD work do they specialise in?

Four wheel drive repairs are what the workshop is known for, from general 4WD servicing through to heavier work on vehicles that are used off road and towing. They are a fitter for Terrain Tamer GVM upgrades in Queensland, so a vehicle that needs a higher gross vehicle mass rating for load carrying can be upgraded and certified through them, and they work on suspension and driveline setups to suit how the vehicle is used.

What driveline and engine work do they carry out?

Reconditioned gearboxes, differentials and engines are a substantial part of the business, and they handle transmission service and repairs, engine overhauls and dyno and diesel tuning in the workshop. Logbook servicing is carried out to the manufacturer's schedule so a newer vehicle keeps its warranty, and general mechanical repairs and diagnostic work are handled alongside the specialist jobs.

What parts and accessories do they stock?

Cape York Automotive is the Cairns agent for Terrain Tamer 4WD parts and accessories, and they also stock Flashlube, Taipan XP and Eaton products. Having the parts on the shelf means a repair or an upgrade can often be started straight away rather than waiting on a delivery from the south.

What do they provide for fleet operators?

​

Fleet and business vehicles are looked after alongside private ones, with scheduled servicing, mechanical repairs, gearbox and diff work and GVM upgrades carried out on work utes and light commercials. The workshop also builds engines for local circuit racing in North Queensland.
