Car Lighting FAQ

Car lights are used for many reasons on cars. They let other road users know where your car is and where you’re planning on going, and they also help you see where you’re driving. Interior lights help you find things in your car and also help when getting in and out. Here’s everything you need to know about car lighting.

Are LED lights legal?

Every state or territory has differing regulations - and what comes into the debate is where the light is mounted, the fact it’s one unit, the beam strength/direction, how many lights are on the vehicle and when the lightbar is activated. Before even thinking of fitting a lightbar, check the laws and regulations to where you’re driving.

Can I replace my cars halogen bulbs with LED bulbs?

It’s recommended that you consult the owner’s manual to see what lights are recommended for your vehicle, but you will find there are LED bulbs (globes) available that can replace halogen bulbs for your headlights, interior lighting, indicators, brake lights etc.

Why are my headlights cloudy?

When headlights are manufactured they have a clear coat applied over the top of the lens. When that clear coat wears off it allows UV light to penetrate the plastic. This can eventually cause discolouration, clouding and possible moisture collection.

Can I replace my halogen bulbs with HID bulbs?

While it is possible to substitute the halogen bulbs on your vehicle with HID replacements, this is not legal. HID headlight systems are required to have self-levelling technology to not blind oncoming drivers, as well as headlight washers to keep them clean. The reflectors in normal halogen headlights are also not designed to distribute HID beams, so the increased light output of HID bulbs cannot be utilised.
