MCC/Smart facts: The name 'smart' is an acronym formed from the full name Swatch Mercedes ART, a description used internally until a need for a neutral, shared name was necessary, Mercedes wishing to avoid the name 'Swatchmobile'. It was initially a late 1980s joint venture between Swiss watchmaker and Volkswagen, replaced in 1994 by another German carmaker in Mercedes-Benz. The partnership company was called Micro Compact Car AG, or MCC, however in 1998 Mercedes' parent company Daimler AG bought out Swatch's share of the partnership. The smart logo comprises the letter 'C' (for 'compact') and a right arrow (signifying forward thinking).
