Mobile mechanics are a great way to get your vehicle serviced or repaired at your home or office, as they are able to bring all the necessary tools and parts with them in their specialised van or truck. They are able to carry out your servicing needs, as well as replacing brakes, suspension and other components just as easily as a workshop based mechanic could., The question is though, are there limits to what a mobile mechanic can do?

Unfortunately, the answer is yes, but it may not be all bad news, with many mobile mechanics offering workshop services for the big jobs that can’t be carried out at home. How do you know which repairs these might be? We have listed some potential workshop only repairs below.

Engine Replacement

This is one of the biggest repairs that may need to be carried out over your vehicle's life. If there is a problem with the engine and it needs to be replaced, best practise is to have the vehicle towed to a proper workshop, where it can be lifted on a hoist to allow access underneath the vehicle. While it is possible to carry out an engine replacement as a mobile mechanic, it is often much more cost-effective to have the replacement carried out at a workshop.

Transmission Replacement

Similar to engine replacement, transmission replacement is a labour intensive job that requires many components to be removed from the vehicle, and this is more cost-effective to be carried out in a traditional workshop. The workshop will have more suitable tooling for supporting the transmission upon removal, which is safer for the mechanic performing the work.

Major engine and transmission repairs

Certain engine repairs, such as timing chain replacement, head gasket replacement and repairs that require special tooling or for components to be sent away for testing are most suitable for workshop repairs, as the vehicle may be required to sit for a number of days until new components are sourced or refurbished. Having the vehicle in a workshop out of the elements will allow for all removed components to be stored safely, limiting potential loss or damage.

If your vehicle requires any repairs that are listed here, speaking to a suitable workshop will be the best course of action to get you back on the road safely. If it is only minor repairs or servicing required, AutoGuru’s network of mobile mechanics will be more than able to carry out the necessary work at your home or workplace at a time that suits you, and at a great price.
